Charlotte Murdock Fleming

Charlotte Fleming, 88, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023. Charlotte was delivered by her father on October 23, 1935 in Converse, Louisiana, and was the youngest of the two children of Dr. Lloyd H. Murdock and Mildred Allen Murdock. Following her graduation from Louisiana State University and her marriage to Lynn Fleming in 1955, Charlotte and Lynn embarked on a world-wide adventure through Lynn’s service in the U.S. Army. During his thirty- year career, Charlotte and Lynn moved more than thirty times across the United States and Europe.

Charlotte took great pride in being the ultimate army wife, able to pack and move at short notice, holding down the home front as Lynn served multiple tours in Vietnam and other deployments, and entertaining countless guests in their home. Regardless of what rank her husband achieved, at home Charlotte always outranked him. Charlotte loved cooking and entertaining and took great joy in honoring her Sabine Parish roots by introducing foreign friends to traditional southern and Tex-Mex foods. Their two postings in London, England were her favorite and she was delighted to be invited to Buckingham Palace and introduced to the Queen. At each new posting, Charlotte always found volunteer work with the Officers’ Wives Club and American Red Cross. After retiring with Lynn to Sabine Parish in 1985, Charlotte continued to volunteer in the community and enjoyed travel with friends and family.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lloyd A. “Bucky” Murdock, and her loving husband, Colonel J. Lynn Fleming. She is survived by her only child, Laurel Fleming Richie and husband, Byron A. Richie of Shreveport, Louisiana; grandson, Collin Fleming Richie and wife, Janay, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; granddaughter, Jillian Richie McAlpin and husband, Joseph, of Bossier City, Louisiana; nephew, Allen Murdock, and niece, Renee Murdock Bridges. Most cherished by “Nini” are her five great-grandchildren, Stafford Richie, Delaney Richie, Esme Richie, Anderson McAlpin and Maxwell McAlpin. Charlotte was also blessed with her lifelong best friend, Edith Jones Palmer.

A service will be held on November 29, 2023 at 2:00 P. M. at the First Baptist Church of Zwolle with Brother Marty Williams officiating. A reception will be held at Charlotte’s home immediately following the service. Honoring Charlotte as pallbearers are Collin Richie, Joseph McAlpin, Byron Richie, Allen Murdock, Gary Lee and Vernon Richie, with Calvin Jones and Allen Rivers serving as honorary pallbearers. The family would like to express their gratitude to loving caregivers, Becky Arterberry, Carolyn McBride, Libby McGaha and Tina Price, and the caring staff of Sabine Retirement and Rehabilitation in Many, Louisiana.
