Folk Festival set for July 15-16

The 37th Annual Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival will be held July 15-16 in Prather Coliseum, which is located at 220 South Jefferson Street in Natchitoches on the campus of Northwestern State University. The site is wheelchair accessible and the festival is family oriented. No alcohol is allowed or sold on the site. The 2016 Festival theme is “Emerging Artists,” celebrating the many outstanding new artists keeping traditions alive in Louisiana.

Gilcrease, Manasco to wed

Butch and Cindy Manasco invite you to join them to celebrate the marriage of their daughter, Savannah Diane to Dustin Allen Gilcrease this Saturday, June 18 at Hodges Gardens State Park. The ceremony will take place in the gardens at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Cleco donates fans to help seniors stay cool and save money this summer

In preparation of summer, Cleco is donating nearly 700 fans to councils on aging and other agencies across the state to help seniors stay cool and manage their electric bills. Shirley Turner, Cleco’s vice president of customer experience, said fans can make a big difference during hot, summer months and significantly cut energy bills.

Eisenhower visits Louisiana in 1941

One of the major aspects of the Louisiana Maneuvers of 1941 was to test all the officers throughout the U.S. Army in their leadership skills. Every officer, from general officers down to platoon leaders were to be evaluated during the large scale maneuvers. Many officers did not excel and were removed from their commands. Many were outstanding and began to rise in rank as soon as the maneuvers ended. One such officer who came to Louisiana and excelled was a Colonel named Dwight D. Eisenhower.

NSU Folk Fest seeks volunteers

.The Natchitoches-Northwestern State University Folk Festival is seeking volunteers to help with this year’s event, which will take place July 15- 16 in air-conditioned Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus. Volunteers are needed to work from 3-11 p.m. Friday and from 6:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday. Anyone interested in volunteering can email the Louisiana Folklife Center at folklife@nsula.edu or call (318) 357-4332.
