Water sales raise concern

A 50-year water sale agreement negotiated between the SRA-LA and a private limited partnership – Toledo Bend Partners L.P. is being considered for approval by the SRA-LA Board of Commissioners on January 26, 2012. All indications are that the Commissioners vote will result in approval of the agreement. A copy of the agreement can be accessed at www.srala-toledo.com. If approved by the SRA it must be sent to Governor Jindal for his approval because the agreement calls for sale of the water outside the boundaries of the state of Louisiana.

Reasons for break from England few

Dear Fellow Citizens,

The reasons for our American Revolutionary War were few. Frankly, we can stop the debate by using “oppression of a free people” as the main cause.

Oppression has many tentacles and its prey has many surfaces available for attack. The colonists first felt the grasp of oppression by being taxed by King George III or England. Interestingly, and seldom thought of from this perspective; what started the Revolutionary War was the pernicious subject of “gun control.”

Hough demands funds be repaid

My comment is for all congressmen regardless of party. The first thing you need to do is repay ALL of the funds you have removed from the Social Security Trust Fund (with interest) which you had converted into the general budget (remember, they put the union bosses in jail for doing the exact same thing--robbing the retirement accounts).

Calvary Baptist shows appreciation to Many City Hall

(Editor’s note: The following is a letter sent to us by Mayor Ken Freeman, who was sincerely touched by the local church wanting to do something good for the staff at City Hall.)

Dear Mr. Freeman,

I hope and pray that your holiday season has and will be filled with hope, joy and thanksgiving. I want you to know why I am writing. It is not to complain or to ask you for something. I am writing to ask if our church could do something for you and for the people of City Hall.

Dodson wants new SRA board

The story you had in the INDEX today regarding ANGRY BUSINESSES CONFRONT SRA are asking the SRA board to do what we have been trying to get them to do for years.

Library tax is of utmost importance, says reader

Dear editor:
Since my husband and I moved to Toledo Bend eleven years ago I have read The Index, but never before have I written a Letter to the Editor. I am doing so now in support of the library tax renewal which is on the Oct. 22 ballot. This tax renewal proposition will continue the services we have today…there is no new building, nor expansion of services or personnel.

Let’s face it, taxes just aren’t popular. However people are smart enough to pick and choose from those they support and those they think are excessive. This library tax renewal is bare bones and basic.

Not having library is great loss, reader says

Citizens of Sabine Parish need to realize what they are liable to lose if the next effort to pass a library maintenance tax fails. Back in the 1930s when the the state initiated the plan to put public libraries in all 64 parishes; Sabine Parish was one of the first to take advantage of the offer. Voters of the parish agreed to provide buildings when the state equipped a library with a basic book collection, personnel and equipment for a year’s library demonstration. After the year was over the voters passed a property tax to maintain and keep it operational.

Rowe debates Marxist/Socialist philosophy

Dear fellow citizens,

Last week we noticed in the “letters” column of the Index, a citizen (comrade) who promotes the Marxist Socialist ideology of taxing the super rich in America. He also casually mentions taking everything they make wouldn’t pay off the debt.

May we denote “taking everything” and the very thought of “taking” something from someone who has earned it is an immoral, criminal thought to begin with. Albeit, though, this type of thinking is in perfect alignment with Marxist Socialist ideologies the contributor clearly identifies himself with.

There has to be a better way, Mills says

Dear editor,

Regular Index readers know I (and my dog Smiley) are big fan’s of Mr. Pete Abington’s column in the Index, and I usually agree with Mr. Abington’s viewpoint. He had lambasted politicians left and right - hit ‘em again buddy!

It’s not that I disagree with Mr. Abington at all - I take it he means well for Sabine Parish and America, but after two recent articles (“Gas Prices” on July 20 and “Investing in America” on July 27) I had to write and express an alternative opinion.

Dutton visits Golden Age of U.S.

Dear Editor,

“...It is not individual prosperity, but the general good that makes cities great. Let republics, then, be established where equality exists, and, on the contrary, principalities where great inequality prevails...” - Machiavelli.
