Rep. Burford Appointed to key committees

Louisiana State Representative Richard Burford (R - District 7) has been selected by the Louisiana House Leadership and the Governor to serve on four important House Committees.

“In accepting these appointments,” said Representative Burford, “I realize each provides not only me but, more importantly, the people and businesses of House District 7 and NW Louisiana a stronger voice in decisions affecting our region, our families and our future.”

Appointed to the Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture and Rural Development committee is important because so much of our region of the state is affected by those industries. “Agriculture and Forestry are vital job-producing activities in the state as a whole and our area particularly,” said Burford, “and, with most of our district being defined as rural, working with the administration and the Commissioner on economic and job friendly development projects will be beneficial to us in District 7.”

Health care is increasingly a factor in the lives of our families. Burford will be serving his second term as a member of the Health and Welfare Committee. This assignment and decisions made in this committee will directly affect the accessibility and affordability of healthcare. “We have rural hospitals that play a vital role in our local communities, providing healthcare and all are economic engines providing quality jobs,” said Representative Burford, “plus we all depend on the services of programs and facilities of the private and non-profit hospitals, including the LSU Medical Center, in Shreveport.”

A new appointment for Burford will be his position on the powerful Ways & Means Committee. It oversees state revenue, bonding of revenue and handles the comprehensive capital budget, which provides for projects across Louisiana. He will also serve on the Joint Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay.

“I’ve not served on this committee, but believe it is important to fiscal approach of our state,” said Burford. “I look forward to working with the Chairman, Speaker and the Governor in determining realistic ways to cut the state budget, by reducing taxes.”

Richard Burford is a Republican member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2007 and recently was re-elected by the voters of House District 7. He represents DeSoto, Sabine and Caddo parishes.
