Noninsured Assistance Program application closing dates given

Producers are reminded that Sept. 1 is the final date to apply for NAP coverage for the following crops for 2011: Christmas trees, crawfish, finfish, strawberries, and grass for sod.

September 30 is the final date to apply for annual ryegrass (producer must designate for hay or grazing). Annual ryegrass is only eligible for NAP coverage when planted in a prepared seedbed and not over seeded on an established grass. If a producer wants to cover annual ryegrass and permanent spring and summer grasses, the service fee for both has to be paid by the Sept. 30, 2010 application closing date. Other crops that have a September 30, 2010 closing date; include fall vegetable crops such as greens, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, and cauliflower.

The NAP program provides protection from catastrophic natural disasters up to 50 percent of an established yield and 55 percent of an established price. Application fees are paid in each parish that a producer has an interest in a crop. There are no provisions for late filed applications and closing dates vary by crop and are scheduled throughout the year. Producers should discuss the current year planting intentions with the local FSA Office to ensure application deadlines are not missed.

The NAP program is optional; however, it is required for all non-insurable crops for benefits received under the Supplemental Revenue Assistance (SURE) Program; Tree Assistance Program; Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-raised Fish Program (ELAP); and in some cases to acquire a production loan through FSA. The Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) requires coverage on grazing only.

All interested farmers and ranchers should contact the local FSA office for eligibility and application details before the application closing dates.
