More than 6,100 family, career and community leaders of America FCCLA members, advisors, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in Chicago, Ill., July 2 - 8 for FCCLA’s 2010 National Leadership Conference. This summer marked the 65th birthday of FCCLA. Chicago served as the setting for the celebration and also the city were FCCLA, formally FHA, was founded in 1945. The activities kicked off with a Fourth of July theme birthday extravaganza at Navy Pier.
During the week, youth members and advisors participated in competitive events, workshops, general sessions, and exhibits focusing on helping students understand and face today’s challenging youth issues. More than half of the students took part in competitive STAR Events Contests.
This years FCCLA collaborated with Children’s Miracle Network to encourage chapters across the nation to raise funds for children’s hospitals and foundations throughout the U.S. Chapters combined to raise more than $250,000.
Passionate, humorous, and exciting are some of the words used to describe the motivational keynote speaker, Aaron Davis. He’s the author of three books that are impacting thousands across the country. Davis challenged attendees to “Think about their choices” and the consequences of those choices.
Over $2 million in scholarships were awarded to students who participated in FCCLA STAR Events contest. Ebarb students who participated in National STAR Events competition were, LeeAnn, Tiffany and Bethany Ebarb in Jr. Life event planning and received a gold medal. Madalyn Sepulvado, Allie Ebarb and Kaitlin Lewing participated in Jr. Applied Technology and received a silver medal. Receiving a silver medal in Sr. Chapter service were Erica Klare and Whitney Meshell. Hunter Curtis and Jarred Brandon received a gold medal in Sr. Entrepreneurship. Brittany McCollister was awarded a bronze medal in Sr. Life Event Planning and Kimberly Stratton was awarded a gold medal in Sr. National Programs in Action - Community Service.
Aside from gaining skills to implement in their family, career and community life, members networked with peers from across the nation to continue spreading the word about “The Ultimate Leadership Experience - FCCLA”
