Northwestern State University tutors seek support

A Northwestern State University tutoring program is seeking community support to continue a free peer tutoring and mentoring service that matches college students with high school and middle school students in need of academic assistance. The NSU Tutors program is designed not only for at-risk students from local and regional schools, but any student in need of assistance.

During the last academic year, NSU Tutors served students from several area schools in English, mathematics, science and other subjects. The tutors are NSU students who volunteer their time from 3:30-5 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays beginning Sept. 7.

“Students and parents find the program to be both needed and effective. This program has been a great help to many children and schools in this community. We have nine computers with access to the Internet and access to a printer in order to help students with their homework and projects. We have also applied for another grant to develop literacy and science education,” said Dr. Michael Cundall, program director.

The goal of NSU Tutors is not only to provide tutoring but also bring students to the NSU campus and see what life on a college campus is like.

“There will be a few Saturday events on the campus throughout the year. We took students to a football game in the fall and will take some to a basketball or baseball game in the spring. For participating in the program, each student will receive a 4GB flash drive and an invitation to a celebratory dinner in the spring.”

The program is in the midst of a fund drive to help develop funds for paper, workbooks, printer ink and other expenses. Anyone who would like to donate can visit the program’s website at https://nsututors.nsula.edu for more information and updates or contact Cundall at (318) 357-4580.
