Confederate veteran Privates W.G. Lewing and Silas Antone, were honored during a grave marker dedication service Saturday, April 24 at the Lewing Family Cemetery in Fisher.
Tony Remedies, Camp Commander of Sabine Rifles Camp 2057, presided over the ceremony which was attended by great grandsons Donnie Paul Lewing of Lewingtown and Reece L. Lewing, Jr. of Shreveport, as well as other descendents and their friends.
A Sons of Confederate Veterans honor guard made up of members from Sabine Rifles Camp 2057 of Florien, Anacoco Rangers Camp 1995 of Leesvile, and Major Josephus Irvine Camp 2031 of Newton, Texas fired a 21 gun musket salute and performed a last canteen ceremony. United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter 2664 of Burkeville, Texas, was also represented.
Private W.G. Lewing, served in Company E, 2nd Louisiana Calvary Regiment, C.S.A. His unit participated in battles at Labadieville and Brashear City and numerous skirmishes in the Red River Campaign.
Private Silas Antone served in Company C, 11th Infantry Battalion and Consolidated Crescent Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. His battalion fought around Simmesport and Fort DeRussy, and his regiment played a major role in the Battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill.
The Last Rite Rose Cermony was conducted by Kathy Hillman, United daughters of Confederacy. The assembly and Taps were performed by First Lieutenant Tex McKnight.
