The descendants of William and Virginia Walker Self will hold a semi-annual memorial service Saturday, May 1 at the Self Cemetery behind Hodges Gardens. Services will begin at 10 a.m.
Members attending the last memorial services voted to have a fish fry at this service. Members decided to contribute $10 per attending member with a maximum of $25 per family, which includes mother, father and children. Any funds not used for the fry will go toward the maintenance fund.
The picturesque little cemetery, now situated deep in the woods a short distance from the back gate of the Gardens, was established on the homestead of Major David Washington Self before the Civil War. Both David and his brother, Capt. Frank Self, along with many of the descendants, are buried there.
The State now owns Hodges Gardens and will issue a pass to those attending this service. Just tell the attendant you wish to go to the Self Cemetery.
After obtaining the pass, proceed along the main road and across the second dam. After crossing the second dam, proceed up the hill to a cattle guard. Do not cross the cattle guard, turn left down the road marked “Private” and follow the signs.
