Brad Koss named president of State Nurse Anesthetists Association

Brad Koss, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) who grew up in Many, La., and now lives in Franklin, Tenn., was recently introduced as the 2021-22 president of the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists (TANA) during the association’s annual meeting. Koss works as the CRNA Manager of Education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

“It is an honor to have been elected by my peers to represent them in this position,” said Koss. “Getting to know my fellow board members, I am perpetually amazed by their dedication to their profession and patients. I’m excited to take on this role in anticipation of what the year ahead will bring for TANA’s 2,400 members.”

NRCS announces signup period for conservation initiatives under Environmental Quality Incentives Program

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is accepting applications for financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), including several special initiatives offered in Louisiana. Producers interested in participating in EQIP should reach out to their local NRCS office and apply by November 19, 2021, for 2022 first-round of funding consideration.

“Financial assistance is available for producers who are looking for ways to improve the natural resources on their land including soil, water and air quality and enhance wildlife habitat on their land,” explained Chad Kacir, State Conservationist for Louisiana. “I encourage all farmers and ranchers who are interested in applying for EQIP to contact their local NRCS office.”

Saturday November 6, the Choctaw Apache Tribe of Ebarb will host their annual Powwow and Art Fest. There will be Native dancers, food, arts & crafts, jewelry, homemade jams & jellies, etc. throughout the day.

The tribe, Dorsey Brunson’s Trail of Tears Cookbook and Danny Ebarb are sponsoring the prize money for the Wild Game Cookoff, Homemade tamale, sweet potato pie, smoked and/ or pan sausage and fry bread competitions. All these contests are open to the public.

There will also be prize money for Adult and Youth Art Contests.

Tourist Commission begins search for new director

The Sabine Parish Tourist & Recreation Commission (SPTRC), a quasi-governmental agency for the State of Louisiana tasked with promoting Sabine Parish as a destination place for tourism and recreation, has begun searching for its new Director this week. Advertisements for the position have been placed in a number of publications statewide, on social media sites, and job-seeker websites. Several of the online adver-tisements for the position are nationwide in scope.

The Sabine Index carried the first print ad last week, and other newspapers running the announcement for the open position include The Advocate in both Lafayette and Baton Rouge, The Shreveport Times, and the American Press in Lake Charles.

Many High School’s highly decorated band recently received top honors at the Pickering Marching Festival.

On Saturday, October 2, the Many Band competed at the Pickering Marching Festival and earned top honors. They received a Superior Rating for Color Guard, Drum Line, Drum Major and Overall Band. They were the only band in their class to receive a Superior in all four divisions and out scored several of the bands in the larger school class. Mr. DeBose said that “ I am extremely proud of the band for their hard work this year. This was our first Marching Contest since COVID started in 2020 so over half the band had never been to a marching contest before and we had to perform without several of the older members who were quarantined.”

This year’s band members are:

Seniors: Hunter Adkins, Emma Campbell, Kyra Cedars, Malorie Cunningham, Jayme French, Brandon Jordan,Michelle Remedies, and Shawn Williams;

Juniors: Savannah Clinkscales , Kadyn Dees, and Trenton Springer;

Great Pumpkin arrives in Many on Friday

‘Spooktacular’ October comes to an official end in Many on Saturday, Oct. 29 with Trick or Treating with the merchants on San Antonio from 3-5 p.m., Trick or Treating in the neighborhoods of Many from 5-7 p.m. and a big Trick or Treat Party and Halloween movie at the Many Community Center that begins at 7 p.m.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown movie is a classic Halloween movie that will delight the children and the rest of the family.

Lucy and Linus visit the pumpkin patch to find a pumpkin. Lucy selects the largest they can find, and makes Linus carry it back to the house. He becomes upset when Lucy starts cutting it to make a jack o lantern. After the opening titles, Snoopy helps Charlie Brown finish raking a pile of leaves. Linus jumps into the heap with a large lollipop, resulting in leaves sticking to his face and lollipop.

Sabine could send NSU its first female president

Dr. Virginia Burkett

Friends call her “Ginny.” Supporters call her “The woman for the job.” History will call her the first female President of Northwestern State University if Dr. Virginia Burkett of Many is selected by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors on Nov. 8.

Many believe Dr. Burkett, a longtime resident of Sabine Parish who works in Washington DC, leads the pack of the top six semi-finalists, from whom will be named a new President of NSU.

Dr. Burkett is currently Chief Scientist in the U.S. Department of the Interior, heading up the Climate and Land Use Change, Office of International Programs, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

She is the only candidate for NSU President with local roots who has earned global respect. Her legacy of intellect and integrity reaches from Louisiana to Washington, DC, and across the world.
