Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Cayli Greer and Lexi Rainer’s Many Elementary School Pre-K3 friends recently visited with Santa! They are just one of the numerous school classes that have submitted their letters to Santa for inclusion in this year’s Index. The letters begin below.

Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!

Each year for decades upon decades, The Sabine Index has published the many letters our local youngsters have penned to Santa Claus.

Each letter is generally submitted by a school teacher or parent.

For us at the paper, reading the many letters containing the wishes and wants of our local children are one of the first indications that this wonderful season is upon us.

We’d like to thank all of those who participate each year and sincerely hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Dear Santa, My name is Annalyse Chavez. This year I have been very good. What I would most want for Christmas this year is dinosaurs and a car for me, too. If your elves are not too busy, I would also like, really, a car. I promise to leave you some cookies and milk.

Campbell to governor and governorelect: Don’t blow this opportunity

Campbell to governor and governorelect: Don’t blow this opportunity

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell is asking Governor John Bel Edwards and Governor-elect Jeff Landry to support placing a massive, taxpayer- funded, clean-energy project in southwest Louisiana on State land, producing a windfall for Louisiana.

Campbell said developers of the proposed “Project Cypress” carbon- capture facility want to locate their injection well on land owned by Gray Stream, one of the wealthiest men in Louisiana and a member of Landry’s transition team.

“The Stream property is near State-owned land in Vermillion Parish,” Campbell said. “Why not build this project where all the people of Louisiana would benefit, rather than one landowner?”

Attempted traffic stop in Vernon Parish leads to chase, death

An attempted traffic stop in Vernon Parish by deputies led to a dangerous chase and eventual death of Nathan Bret Sandel, 47, who was wanted on warrants for felony stalking and failure to appear on charges of domestic abuse battery and assault charges in Sabine.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, Vernon deputies tried to stop Sandel’s truck. According to reports by the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, he headed north toward Sabine Parish and drove his truck across the median and into oncoming traffic several times.

He was eventually stopped on Highway 171 at Gandy Road just south of Florien. Sabine Sheriff Deputies, Vernon Parish Deputies, and Desoto Parish Deputies were involved and at the scene. The deputies tried to negotiate with the suspect for an hour, but he eventually shot himself. Sandel was taken immediately to Sabine Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

PCI asking for Christmas donation consideration

PCI asking for Christmas donation consideration

Sabine Parish Cloverbuds have started the year off in a big way. During the October meeting they brought canned goods to donate to SCOA. The cloverbuds also experimented with lava lamps and made catapults with the help of Mr. Joey Jones. In November, they had a special guest for Native American Heritage month. Ms. Deborah West taught the kids how to make beaded necklaces and then they wove a life size dream catcher. Our November service project was Gift-a-Grandparent.
